The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of the various approaches that information technology can be used to support and improve processes of care, using the knowledge you have gained and your overall understanding of the course concepts.
In essence, you will identify a process of care that requires a workflow, which you may be directly involved in or have observed at any clinical setting.
This process could be paper-based or could already be integrated into the existing information system, but is not achieving its desired outcomes.
The process could include anything from patient admission, discharge, transferal, a clinical visit, carrying out a protocol, clinical guideline, procedure, or an intervention, or receiving an order, etc.
Provide a recommendation/solution using any form of information technology that could effectively address the problem and potentially improve overall health care quality.
Briefly describe the workflow at the clinical setting.
Start with a typical patient care episode and analyze the steps of the process from the beginning to end of care episode.
Include all levels and phases as well as personnel (clinical and administrative) who are involved. Completed paper is worth up to 500 points.
Identify the area of inefficiency in your practice and use a flow-chart to analyze the process. Show how it is carried out step-by-step. Include the standard symbols and rules for designing a flowchart, which you have learned in Unit 2. Use the underlying concepts of workflow, task analysis, human factor/ergonomics, human-technology interface, and utility testing to analyze nurse workflow problem and provide an information technology recommendation/solution that would potentially improve the processes of care as well as related clinical and administrative
outcomes. Review relevant literature and visit various websites provided.
Create a pictorial representation of the current workflow as it stands
Create your flowchart using Word
Use standards flowchart symbols and rules
This website provides useful tools for designing flowcharts:
Identify and list the key workflow problems (inefficiencies). Show these problem areas on the flowchart.
All reference literature is to be scholarly and published within the last five (5) years.
he process could include anything from patient admission, discharge, transferal, a clinical visit, carrying out a protocol, clinical guideline, procedure, or an intervention, or receiving an order, etc.
The recommendation/solution could be any information technology that you have learned about during the course that could effectively address the problem and potentially improve overall health care quality.
1. Describe how information technology could address each of the workflow problems listed.
a. Identify the information technology
b. Describe how this information technology could potentially improve workflow and clinical or administrative outcomes (improve care efficiency and effectiveness)
c. Use the literature to support your solution (e.g. cite literature on how clinical decision support systems provide drug alerts and improve outcomes).
