Answer ONE (and only one) of the following prompts:
During the past several weeks we have discussed very different popular uprisings across the late 18th-and early 19th-century Americas. While these uprisings sustained large-scale mobilizations, contradictions existed between leaders and followers. To what extent and in what ways did the outlook and motivations of rebel leaders and popular insurgents diverge? Consider in particular the insurgencies in Saint-Domingue and ONE of the following: the Andes OR New Spain. How did this divergence affect the outcome of popular uprisings in each area?
How did religion (beliefs, practices and/or institutions) shape the popular rebellions of the late 18thcentury that weve covered? Use examples from our readings, lectures and discussions to discuss the course of the Haitian Revolution and ONE of the following: the Andean rebellions, OR the early nineteenth century rebellions in New Spain.

Citation:It is important to provide a citation when you quote directly or paraphrase an idea from another source. Provide a brief footnote or parenthetical citation with the author last name and page number. If you cite an outside source (neither expected nor required), please provide the full footnote citation and/or bibliography entry at the end of the essay under the headingAdditional Bibliography. Youdo notneed to write out bibliographical entries for our assigned readings.
Be judicious when you cite: avoid block quotes and make sure any directly quoted material you do use is well integrated alongside your own analysis. Paraphrasing (restating in your own words) can be immensely useful, as long as you reference correctly.
